Bequia Animal Protection Alliance in Action

Meet Tiger 🐾

This handsome boy had recurring eye infections, but his owners didn’t have the resources or transportation to bring him to the vet to treat it.

Thanks to the teamwork of our BAPA volunteers and the local vet Dr Saskia Gooding, Tiger was diagnosed with Entropion — a condition where the lower eyelids roll inward, causing constant irritation to both eyes and an ulcer in his right eye.

He was sent to stay with a temporary foster family, where antibiotic eye drops were used to clear the infection so he could proceed with surgery. The surgery restores the eyelids to their normal position preventing future irritation and infection.

Thank you to our members who helped with transportation to and from his vet visits, to our volunteer who fostered him and ensured he received all his medication while staying close to the clinic, and of course to our vets and donors for making this surgery possible.

After spending five weeks with a foster volunteer, Tiger is now back home with his owners — happier than ever. ❤️

Meet Ollie

After being alerted about a woman who lived alone and in a remote location. She had multiple dogs including a litter of newborn puppies, and was in desperate need of assistance. A BAPA volunteer was guided to her home. The dogs were treated for parasites, the adult females were subsequently spayed. Concerns mounted for one poor puppy who was obviously struggling and wouldn't survive without immediate intervention.

The woman had no hesitations too give away the pup, as realised she couldn't cope. So he was immediately collected and his healing journey could began. Ollie was the sweetest little pup and very dangerously sick. With plenty of rest, lots of love, and all the medication he needed, he returned to perfect health and subsequently BAPA found a perfect for ever home for him.

Meet Leo

This puppy was in shockingly condition, very very sick. Mange was killing him. He lived with a family but nothing was being done to help him.

BAPA immediately arranged to take him to the vets to start treatment. Leo was able to continue his treatment plan at home with regular visits from a BAPA volunteer, plus clear instructions for daily care provided to the family. He made a truly wonderful recovery.

One of the most rewarding aspects of Leo's journey to good health was that it was witnessed by 3 young children, who were  grateful, and now had a sweet and playful puppy in their midst, and have learnt for the future to pay more care and attention to their beloved pet.

BAPA works with local schools

BAPA realised that they need not only to assist with sick animals but to educate and inform the younger generations about animal welfare, so we asked each of the Bequia schools to enter pupils in our art competition, to find the 12 best drawings of Bequia animals from all age groups to go in our 2027 Calendar.  The 12 winners were presented with a cash prize and a goody bag by the Prime Minister, the Honorable Dr Friday at the Bequia playing field.

The BAPA volunteers along with their doggy mascots (all rescue animals) were there to support the event and offer cupcakes all round. Our youngest winner 6 year old Zulu proudly shows off his drawing. 100% of the proceeds from the Calendar goes to BAPA for the welfare of the animals on the island. Watch this space to purchase your 2027 Calendar towards the end of the year.
